Welcome Anne:
Your reference to Jon Kabat-Zinn peaks my interest for I, myself, having been working my way through “Full Catastrophe Living” for the
past number of months and find it a supplement to these classes. Perhaps “months” is in need of explanation. Rather than read the work
from front to back, I have been taking the instructions seriously which means doing the exercises faithfully. Meditation is already part
of my daily regimen being a practitioner of Zen Buddhism; The Yoga exercises parallel the routine that was prescribed to me to
strengthen a back hobbled by worn facet joints — the routine seems to be informed by Yoga. Should you possess the text, you will find
that the Body Scan echoes the Kindergarten lessons that were posted last summer. I am given to substitute the Coach’s exercises here,
not as a variation on a theme, but, for the life of me, I cannot project my breathing to other than my abdomen, lungs, and nostrils where
it has been focused for many a year.
Like myself, you may wish to pursue, at some point, Jon Kabat-Zinn’s program in person, if for no other reason than it has been
expressed on this Blackboard: “It would be nice to finish a conversation.” Although I suspect, if your experience mirrors mine, that the
Kindergarten exercises will keep you occupied for some time to come.
In your posting, you do not specify where “here” is. I am located in Hamilton, which is part of the GTA (the greater Toronto area), in
Southern Ontario, Canada, and, with a large dollop of frustration and perseverance, I located the following program:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/halltrey/
It may serve as an example of the services that are offered by a medical practice influenced by Jon Kabat-Zinn. This is not to suggest
that you should abandon this “Ship of Fools”. Personally, it is my intention to post anything that I find pertinent and helpful in attending
the above program on the Blackboard.
Once again, welcome aboard.
Douglas
