Student John:
Let me first acknowledge that your contrition is appreciated and let me also say at the same time that I was not so much wounded
by your words but that you missed the point — actually, you posted a perfect example of the point I was trying to make in my
feeble fashion. In other words, I am just as much to blame as yourself. Confusion in communication abounds on the Internet for O
so many reasons. Just the other night, Sally and I fell into such confusion and we have been talking for years now via AIM. John’s
recent comments on my posts have not fallen on deaf ears; I may argue with his prescription of being “concise” (after all what
would one expect of a Journalist) but I have no argument with his call for “clarity”.
On to other matters.
“Student John” is really quite an awkward handle. My Father’s name was John yet I can’t recall anyone in hearing distance ever
referring to him by that name. He was known by the variant Jack, far and wide, although his work mates referred to him as Johnny
off and on. What I should like to propose is that you adopt this nomenclature — Jack. Think of it as a nickname. Mull it over but,
as an obvious piece of manipulation, I would be flattered.
Douglas
