Hi Sally:

Forgive me, but I don’t see this interpretation as valid. “Selective Attention” is not synonymous with “Creative Apperception” and
I ascertain the problem to reside in the definition of “apperception” for I have a Post-It note stuck in my copy of Playing and
Reality that defines the term — and more than indicates that I found it problematic. The note goes as follows:

Apperception:

1. The mind’s perception of itself as a conscious agent, self consciousness.

2. Mental perception, recognition.

To my way of thinking, the quote indicates more of motive and meaning than “Selective Attention” ever suggests but that is only my
interpretation. It would be best for all interested to read the article themselves and decide for themselves. As you suggest the
piece can be found in “Winnicott, D. W. “Creativity and its Origins”. Playing and Reality. London: Tavistock, 1971.”
