When a person chooses to act in a certain way he must shoulder
the punishing consequences of that action. The distressed person
may insist that another carry or share his burden, but it cannot
be done. The individual who insists upon wandering in the desert
is the person who must come back. No one can come back for him.
People sense the truth of this universal law but try to push it
away. They demand immunity from the law of cause and effect. That
is like demanding that a dropped rock should fall upwards.

The law of cause and effect cannot be broken, but it can be tran-
scended through self-insight. A man must see how his action arouses
a reaction on the same level. Hostility provokes hostility. A wish
to take advantage of others will arouse their wish to take advantage
in return. End the action and the reaction ends."
