Dear Sir:
To say that I am humbled by this post would be quite the exercise in modesty. It is such a real — and I stress real —
extrapolation on my mere quotation from The Politics of Experience that I am dumbfounded.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I never had the pleasure of meeting R. D. Laing, nevermind hearing him in public. When I was at the Tavistock, he was a pariah (I am
trying to remember whether it was Strachey who did his analysis and disowned him). When I did inquire, he was dismissed; mind you
he wasn’t hated like David Cooper, his disciple who carried on the anti-psychiatry movement to extremes.
What really astounds me here, though, is the statement: “from my notes”. I can’t imagine having the facility to both listen and
write at one and the same time. In my life, I have had to rely on a very unreliable memory to record such information.
with gratitude and envy
Your humble servant
Douglas
